Walgreen’s to Offer Free Health Care to Unemployed Workers

Drugstore Walgreens is offering free health care at its in-store Take Care clinics to unemployed workers and their families who no longer have health care coverage as a result of the job loss. This massive undertaking to offer free care to jobless workers will be offered at all of Walgreen’s 341 Take Care clinics located in 35 markets around the U.S. Walgreen’s is calling their free health care initiative the “Take Care Recovery Plan”.There are of course a few stipulations to the free health care being offered, so it’s not like anyone can just go into one of these clinics and get free care. Here’s the bulk of the requirements:

  • You must provide proof that you have become unemployed on or after March 31, 2009.
  • Free health care includes only basic services, such as routine treatments and test, allergies, infections, skin conditions, and other common ailments.
  • Free care offer is good through the end of 2009. If you find a new job before the end of 2009, you lose the free health care benefit.
  • Spouses and children are eligible for free care as well.
  • Free services will be offered M-F, 11am – 3pm.
  • Free care does not include vaccinations, checkups, or injections. Instead, the care will focus on treatments otherwise needed at an urgent care facility.

The free treatments being offered at Walgreen’s Take Care clinics typically cost around $59 per visit, so it can add up to significant savings to a family who is uninsured over the course of the 9 months the free care is being offered. There’s no word yet whether Walgreens plans on extending the free health care initiative beyond 2009.

Jumping on the free health care bandwagon, medical lab operater Quest Diagnostics is participating in the Take Care Recovery Plan alongside Walgreens. They plan to offer free strep throat and urinary tract infection tests to the unemployed.

I think it’s awesome what Walgreens is doing for the many unemployed workers out there, and I hope other companies follow their lead. If everyone couldĀ  just gives a little, it can go a long way.
