Quick Cheating Your Workouts – You Can’t Fool Your Body

dont-cheat-workoutsDo you ever workout – whether it be on a treadmill, elliptical machine or lifting weights – and focus more on the number of reps, miles or revolutions rather than focusing on proper technique? I admit that I have, so I’m sure I’m not the only one out there who has cheated my body out of a good workout (Or at least I hope I’m not the only one!).

The fact is that proper technique – especially when it comes to weight lifting – is far more important than how many reps you can do. We often get caught up in trying to max out on weight and reps because it makes us feel stronger to know those numbers, but in actuality pumping out meaningless reps wont’ help you gain strength or lose weight.

When I talk about proper technique during a workout, I’m referring to how well you properly perform the movement and how well you control the weight during each rep. I know that it can be quite damaging to one’s ego to go from doing 10 reps of 250 lbs on the bench press, to practicing better technique and only being able to put up 4-5 good reps. You need to realize, however, that accomplishing 4-5 reps with proper technique is far body for your muscle development and weight loss goals than flailing your body, arching your back, and digging your feet in to get 10 reps. It may look better to your friends at the gym, but it’s not doing your body any good.

Thankfully, it’s pretty hard to cheat the treadmill, elliptical machine or other related fitness machines. Really the only ways to cheat yourself out of a good cardio workout is to cut your workout time short, hop off the machine in the middle of your workout, or rely to heavily on your arms to hold you up. If you find yourself doing any of these things, stop it! If you are going to spend the time to workout – whether it be a weight lifting or cardio routine – you might as well do it right. Practice proper technique in your workouts and I promise you that you will see the results.

Very nice cheat tricks. I’ve been trying to lose my stubborn stomach fat for a year by hard diet and exercise. Only lose 4 kg and then stop there… Thanks for the posting!
