Have you ever heard of the KISS concept? ”Keep It Simple Stupid” is a great concept when talking about dieting and weight loss. By keeping your diet plan simple and easy to follow, you will greatly increase your odds of long term success. The key is to get back to the basics; eat low-calorie meals that are full of nutrition. Yeah, that means veggies, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein sources.

Although there are plenty of hard-to-follow diet programs out there, there are certainly a few easy ones to choose from. One such program is the MyPyramid Plan that was created by the USDA. It provides you with a free, easy-to-follow diet plan based on your age, gender, body type and how active you are.

Another healthy choice that is extra easy to follow is the Mayo Clinic Diet. This diet is based on the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid, which allows you to eat an unlimited amount of fruits/vegetables daily, four to eight servings of carbs, three to seven servings of protein, three to five servings of fats and up to 75 calories of sweets per day.

There are other easy-to-follow diet programs out there as well, but make sure to research each one thoroughly before making a choice on one. Also, always talk to your doctor before starting a new weight loss program. And make sure to focus on diet programs that you are confident you can stick with over the long term. This means taking into consideration the dietary guidelines/rules, price, how the diet program has been around and whether or not the program promotes eating from all of the major food groups.

Safe Weight Loss

Once you’ve chosen your diet, you will want to ensure that you’re sticking to the USDA’s weight loss recommendations. They recommend you lose weight at a rate of no more than 2 lbs. per week, which is the equivalent of 1,000 calories per day or 7,000 calories-a-week. This ensures that your body properly adjusts to the changes that it’s experiencing. So, think long term when choosing your diet plan – finding an easy-to-follow program will increase your odds of success.


You should avoid fad diets that eliminate fats, carbs or other essential nutrients from your diet, according to the Mayo Clinic. Their advice on evaluating a diet program that is right for you is to consider your past diet plans and whether they worked, choose a plan that fits your personality, consider your budget and make sure a diet conforms to any health conditions you may have. They also strongly urge people to check with their doctor before starting a diet plan.
