Bottled Water May Not Be That Safe After All…

Recent findings by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) claims that some bottled waters contained mixtures totaling 38 different pollutants, including fertilizer, bacteria, and even traces of Tylenol! The study consisted of 10 of the best-selling bottled water brands on the market, and it found that, on average, each brand of water tested contained traces of 8 different contaminants.

One of the worst offenders was Walmart’s Sam Choice bottled water which was found to contain the same properties as regular old tap water. Furthermore, some samples tested positive for chemicals that were beyond the legal limit in the state of California, including bromodichloromethane which is a known carcinogen, and the disinfection byproduct trihalomethanes – commonly found in solvents and refrigerants and many are considered to be carcinogenic.

The EWG recommends drinking filtered water over bottled water, not only for ensuring safer drinking water, but also to save on the obscene amount of waste produced each year from empty bottles. 90% of empty water bottles end up in landfills each year, and this number is in the tens of billions worldwide.

Aside from the waste and quality issue involved with bottled waters, the cost of purchasing this water is incredibly ridiculous if you really look at the numbers. According to, bottled water costs up to 10,000 times more per gallon than tap water! They also go on to say that tap water is held to stricter health guidelines than bottled water.

The solution:

  • Drink filtered water
  • Fill a reusable water bottle
  • Or just suck it up and drink water from the tap!
